Six Tigers Taken on Second Day
The second day of the NFL Draft proved to be a busy one for LSU. Six Tigers were picked during the final five rounds, including three third round selections, last month in New York.
The NFL Draft ended with a total of seven LSU players being taken in the two-day event, which is the second-best showing ever for the Tigers in the draft. In 1948, LSU had eight players selected in the draft. LSU has had seven players picked in the NFL Draft seven times, including three times this decade.
"This year’s NFL Draft proved once again that the LSU football program continues to be a place that players go to get prepared to play at the next level," LSU coach Les Miles said. "At LSU, we have a process in place that gets our student athletes ready for the next step in their life, whether it be the NFL or the business world. Defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, the most decorated defender in school history, continued LSU’s streak of first round picks by being selected fifth overall on Saturday by the Kansas City Chiefs. LSU has now had a player taken in the first round of the NFL Draft for five-straight years. Dorsey is the 31st first-round NFL pick in school history
Cornerback Chevis Jackson became the first Tiger selected on Sunday as the Mobile, Ala., native was picked in the third round with the 68th overall pick by Atlanta. Three minutes later, LSU running back Jacob Hester was taken with the 69th overall pick by the San Diego Chargers.
LSU wide receiver Early Doucet was the third Tiger picked in the third round as the Arizona Cardinals took the St. Martinville native with the 81st overall selection.
LSU safety Craig Steltz went in the fourth round, 120th pick, to the Chicago Bears, while quarterback Matt Flynn and tight end Keith Zinger were both seventh round picks.
Tiger fans love their team and despite their opponent they still wear their LSU Apparel and Belts to the games.
Flynn was taken 209th overall by the Green Bay Packers with Zinger following with the 232nd pick by the Atlanta Falcons.
A pair of undrafted Tigers signed free agent contracts with teams following the draft on Sunday as linebacker Ali Highsmith agreed to a deal with the Cardinals, while linebacker Luke Sanders agreed to terms with the New Orleans Saints.
Other Tigers expected to sign free agent deals in the coming days include offensive lineman Will Arnold, cornerback Jonathan Zenon and punter Patrick Fisher.
"I’m so proud of all of our seniors because they have been a part of the most successful class in the history of LSU football," Miles said. "This is a great day for these young men and their families, but it’s also a great day for LSU and our football program."
Since taking over at LSU for the 2005 season, Miles has now coached 19 Tigers, including six first round selections, who have gone on to be picked in the NFL Draft.
LSU’s schedule is pretty tough and their fans, with their LSU Polo Shirts on, are mostly familiar with teams the Tigers play on a rotating schedule.
LSU had several players taken in the 2008 Draft. Glenn Dorsey was taken in the first round and fifth overall. There were three players taken in the third round. The ones in the third round were taken sixty-eighth, sixty ninth, and eighty first overall. There was one player taken in the fourth round. He was taken one hundred twentieth overall. There were two players taken in the seventh round. They were taken two hundred ninth and two hundred thirty second.
The seven LSU players taken this year marks the third time this decade that the Tigers have had that many players selected in a single year.
LSU has had at least one first round pick for five straight years, a streak that dates back to the 2004 draft.
Glenn Dorsey became the 31st NFL first round pick for LSU when he was selected No. 5 overall by Kansas City on Saturday.

Since the 2001 draft, LSU has had its draft-eligible starting quarterback from the previous season picked every year but one. Josh Booty was picked in the sixth round by Seattle in 2001. Rohan Davey was taken in the fourth round by New England in 2002. Matt Mauck was taken in the seventh round by Denver in 2004. JaMarcus Russell was picked by the Oakland Raiders with the first overall pick in 2007. Matt Ryan was taken in the seventh round by Green Bay in 2008. The only exception is Marcus Randall, who ironically has played on the defensive side of the football for two NFL teams. This has been going on every year since he left the LSU football program following his senior season in 2002.
