How the Broncos Bucked Their Way into NFL History

"You only fail when you stop trying." I once read that expression on a car’s bumper sticker. There is certainly a huge amount of truth contained in that adage. We may not always succeed when we try, though we will certainly fail when we stop trying. The history of the Denver Broncos franchise proves that if you keep trying after failing repeatedly, you may eventually achieve your goal. In 1977, 1986, 1987, and 1989, the Broncos lost the NFL game whose prestige is as high as Colorado’s Rocky Mountains: the Super Bowl. However, through struggle and perseverance, the Broncos earned championship rings in 1987 and 1989.

The Broncos’ name does not represent any run-of-the-mill horse. In both the U.S. and Canada, a bronco is a horse that is untrained or that constantly bucks. Broncos can be wild horses that have lived in the wilderness their entire lives, or domesticated horses that tend to buck. Finally, broncos can refer to bucking horses in rodeos.  In all of these cases, broncos represent strong, majestic creatures with a rugged feistiness.

Just as we can trace the stages of a horse’s life back to its birth, we can trace the birth of the Denver Broncos, before the team had Sports logo Merchandise. In 1960, the Broncos were one of the original eight teams that were included in the new American Football League. In fact, they played the Patriots in the AFL’s first official game, and defeated then by the score of 13-10. The Broncos also won their first home game in the AFL, by beating the Oakland Raiders.

BRONCOS SUPER BOWL HISTORY
Though the Broncos franchise had a shaky start, it appeared in its first Super Bowl in 1977. Unfortunately, the Broncos had no success in these first appearances:

Super Bowl XII: Lost to the Dallas Cowboys,  27-10.
Super Bowl XXI: Lost to the New York Giants 39-20
Super Bowl XXII: Lost to the Washington Redskins 42-10.
Super Bowl XXIII: Lost to the San Francisco 49ers 55-10.

However, like a bucking bronco in the wild, the Broncos never lost hope, and later won two Super Bowls

Super Bowl XXXII (1998):
The Broncos running back Terrell Davis rushed for three touchdowns in this game, setting a Super Bowl record and thrilling fans as much as an NFL Merchandise Sale. At halftime, the Broncos were edging the Green Bay Packers, by 17-14.  In the second half, both teams’ defenses became more tenacious. With the score tied 24-24, John Elway quickly marched his team towards the endzone, with Davis rushing in to put the Broncos up 31-24. The Broncos defense then stopped Brett Favre’s final drive, granting them the NFL championship.

Super Bowl XXIII (1999):
The following year, the Broncos returned to the Super Bowl, to face the Atlanta Falcons. This was Elway’s last game, and he made it count. Elway tossed the pigskin for a whopping 336 yards, and even rushed to score a touchdown. The Broncos capitalized on some Falcons’ mistakes, giving them a 17-3 halftime lead. In the second half, the Falcons had chances to score off Broncos’ errors, but were unsuccessful. In the game, the Broncos’ execution and the Falcons’ missteps both contributed to the final score: 35-19 Broncos over the Falcons.

BRONCOS TOP COACHES
During their Super Bowl runs in the 1980s and 1990s, two coaches led the Broncos to the championship games:

Dan Reeves:
Reeves coached the Broncos from 1981-1992. He led the Broncos to the Super Bowl three times, and the Atlanta Falcons once (ironically against the Broncos). Although Reeves never won a Super Bowl, he has been one of the most successful coaches in NFL history, thrilling Broncos fans who sported Denver Broncos Merchandise at each game.  As coach of the Broncos, Reeves earned a 110-73-1 record, or an astounding .601winning percentage.

Mike Shanahan
Shanahan has served as the Broncos’ general from 1995, until the present. He led the Broncos to Super Bowl victories in 1998 and 1999.  Shanahan’s career record as the Broncos head coach is currently 130-78-0, or a .625 winning percentage. His tenure at the Broncos is a work in progress, as he remains the head coach of the team. Prior to coaching the Broncos, Shanahan served as the head coach of the Los Angeles Raiders, for two years.
